New Population Estimates
There are a number of private firms, governmental agencies and other organizations that produce population estimates. But those produced by the Texas State Data Center are the official estimates for Texas and they are free. In late 2008, the Texas State Data Center has published a fresh set of state, county and place level population estimates. These estimates are available on their website, www.txsdc.utsa.edu.
The new population estimates are for July 1, 2007 and January 1, 2008 and are provided for the State of Texas, all 254 counties and all 1,522 cities and villages in Texas. The January 2008 population estimate for Texas was 24,105,417, a 15.6% increase from the 2000 Census.
Final estimates are derived by averaging the estimates produced under three different methods. A number of variables are used in the analysis including births, deaths, elementary school enrollment, vehicle registration, voter registration and residential building permits.
Although the U.S. Bureau of the Census also produces annual population estimates for Texas counties and places, DeskMap Systems recommends using those produced by the Texas State Data Center. The Texas State Data Center estimates are based on more recent birth and death data and include more recent information on annexation and boundary changes.
